Statistics Related to Motorcycle Accidents

Years ago the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) created a report after studying data related to motorcycle accidents in the United States.  The findings of that report are as follow:

  1. Less than half of motorcyclists who were fatally injured during motorcycle accidents were wearing a helmet.  It is a well-known fact that when people wear helmets they can reduce their chances of suffering a serious head, neck or brain injury.
  2. The majority of motorcycle accident related fatalities occur on rural roads.
  3. One leading cause of motorcycle accidents in Houston and other populous cities is drunk driving.  FARS states that high blood-alcohol levels are a major problem among motorcyclists.
  4. Just over half of all motorcycle accident fatalities occur when bikers are negotiating a curve prior to their collisions.
  5. 80% of all motorcycle accident deaths occur off the road.
  6. In almost 2/3 of all motorcycle accident fatalities the bikers were speeding and speeding led to their crashing.
  7. 60% of all motorcycle accident fatalities occurred during the evening hours.
  8. An increased number of riders that are age 40 and over are getting killed during motorcycle accidents in the United States.
  9. 33% of fatally injured bikers do not have the correct driver’s license when they are operating motorcycles.

Based upon the findings of the report from FARS, it is evident that motorcyclists sometimes engage in dangerous behaviors or do not take preventative measures prior to motorcycle accidents.  Yet, an alarming number of motorcycle accidents are not caused by bikers, but rather drivers of cars, trucks and other types of motor vehicles.  In fact, driver negligence happens to be a leading cause of Houston motorcycle accidents.

If you and/or a family member have suffered serious or fatal injuries due to an accident, you and/or the family member may be eligible to file a claim. However, persons seeking to preserve any potential legal claims should contact an attorney promptly because Texas has mandatory time periods ("Statute of Limitations") in which a lawsuit must be filed.
