DePuy Hip Recall

Recall Of The ASR XL Acetabular System & DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System.

On August 26, 2010, the world’s largest maker of healthcare products Johnson & Johnson recalled approximately 93,000 hip replacement implants after many patients complained that they had to undergo a second hip replacement surgery because the first implants had failed to work properly.

DePuy Orthopaedics, a unit of Johnson & Johnson, said the massive recall affected two hip replacement systems, the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System, a total hip replacement system that was sold worldwide, and DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System, a partial hip replacement designed to preserve more bone which was approved for sale only outside the United States.

According to information released by Johnson & Johnson, approximately 13% of patients who received the ASR XL Acetabular System (total hip replacement) and 12% of patients who received the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System (partial hip replacement) had to have the medical devices surgically removed, and then replaced, after developing trouble walking or experiencing pain.

How Will I Know If My Implant Needs Replacing?
